Update Re: Genevier Sullivan Memorial Bursaries for Indigenous Former Youth in Care

Update Re: 2020/21 School Year Genevier Sullivan Memorial Bursaries

  • We received nine applications from Indigenous Former Youth in Care studying in many areas, all of whom we believe will be future leaders in our society and make our society a better place for both former youth in care, and Indigenous peoples, to grow up and grow old.

  • We awarded four $1,000 bursaries.

  • Two of these bursaries were awarded to mature students (27ys+).

  • Each bursary recipient is being provided an opportunity to have themselves featured on our website, should they want to have their achievements publicly celebrated in this way. While we want to celebrate the recipient’s achievements, we also know of the stigmas youth in care face and we leave it to the recipients to decide on how they’d like to be celebrated (privately, or publicly).

  • We were unable to assess the remaining five applications because:

    • 2 applicants did not provide a budget with their application,

    • 2 applicants did not provide a reference letter with their application, and

    • 1 applicant did not provide proof of their registration for classes or a copy of their unofficial transcripts with their application

$3,500 in bursary funds remain from the 2020/21 school year and they are being transferred into the 2021/22 School Year Bursary Fund.

2021/22 School Year Genevier Sullivan Memorial Bursaries (Application Deadline: October 1, 2021)

  • In addition to the $3,500 of carry-over from last years round of applications, we have added an additional $1,500 to this bursary fund, so the 2021/22 school year will have a minimum of $5,000 in available bursaries. This number could grow as well so keep your eyes on our webpage!!!

  • All eligible students are encouraged to apply this school year, regardless of whether they were successful recipients this year. If you need help completing an application, each post-secondary school has a student support centre that should be able to help you. If they do not, let us know and we can help seek a volunteer to help you.
